“The Norwood Builder.” The camera pans over chaos - scattered papers, cigarettes, a violin, and finally the unblinking Holmes himself. Watson enters the room quietly and takes the measure of things.
WATSON: Holmes. (Watson kneels at Holmes’ side) You must permit yourself some food, you must eat.
HOLMES: At present I cannot afford energy and nerve force for digestion.
WATSON: Well, you must if you intend to pursue this case.
HOLMES: I fear, my dear fellow, that our case will end ingloriously by Lestrade hanging our client. (Glances briefly at Watson, then back to the wall) That shall certainly be a triumph for Scotland Yard. There’s a telegram.
WATSON: (reading aloud) “Important fresh evidence at hand, McFarlane’s guilt definitely established, advise you to abandon case, Lestrade.”
HOLMES: It is Lestrade’s little cock-a-doodle of victory.
(Watson puts down the telegram and goes to the fireplace, picking Holmes’ violin and bow out of the disarray, placing them carefully on the chair. He returns to the table and pours Holmes some tea. Holmes closes his eyes and smiles briefly.)
WATSON: Let’s have some breakfast, and then go out together, and see what we can do.
HOLMES: (sighs) I feel as though I shall need your company and moral support today.
